ROCABERTI DE PERELADA, JUAN TOMÁS. - Archbishop, 58th general of the Dominicans, born into a noble family at Perelada (Catalonia) about 1624, died at Madrid on 13 June 1699.
He was professor of theology at the University of Valenza and provincial of Aragon in 1664. During his generalate he obtained the beatification and canonization of various religious of his Order, including St. Rosa da Lima. Archbishop of Valenza (1676), he was twice its viceroy, and in 1695 received the office of inquisitor general of Spain.
He wrote: Alimento espiritual (Barcelona 1668); Teologia mistica (ibid. 1669); De Rom. Pontif. auctoritate (3 vols., Valenza 1691-94), a work against Gallicanism that was prohibited in France; Biblioth. max. pontif. (21 vols., Rome 1695-99), a collection of the most important writings of canonists and theologians, intended to demonstrate the principles concerning the infallibility and superiority of the pope, set forth in the preceding work.
