ROSE OF LIMA, Saint. - Dominican virgin, b. in Lima on 20 April 1856, d. there on 24 Aug. 1617. Daughter of Gaspare Flores and Maria Oliva, her baptismal name Isabella was changed to that of R. From infancy, eager for holiness, she took as her model St. Catherine of Siena, whom she was later able to imitate also in the religious vocation, entering the Dominican Third Order (10 Aug. 1606).

Her whole brief life was a continuous exercise of harsh penances, accompanied by physical trials and especially by long spiritual aridity. She loved solitude and enjoyed the spirit of prophecy.

She was beatified by Clement IX with a brief of 12 Feb. 1668 and canonized by Clement X on 12 Apr. 1671. Chronologically she is the first Saint of the new world; she was proclaimed patroness of Lima, of Peru and of America. Her feast fell at first on 26 Aug., today on the 30th of the same month.
