RINALDI (Raynaldus), ODORICO. - Oratorian, b. at Treviso in June 1594 (cf. A. Marchesan, op. cit. in bibl., p. 7), d. at Rome on 22 Jan. 1671.
After studying in his native city and at Parma, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory at Rome in 1618 and was its superior twice (1650-56). He is the most important continuator of the Annales ecclesiastici, which Baronius (v.) had carried down to 1198. R., making use both of notes left by Baronius and of documents from the Vatican Archive, published at Rome, between 1646 and 1662, 8 vols. in folio (vols. XIII-XX of the collection), reaching the year 1534. Vol. IX (XXI of the collection), divided into two parts, appeared at Rome posthumously, edited by the Congregation, and reaches the year 1565. It bears two dates: that of printing, 1676-77, and that of ecclesiastical approval, 1685-86. R. also published in Italian an abridgment of Baronius' Annales in 3 vols. (1st ed., Rome 1641-43), and one of his own (1st ed., ibid. 1667). Numerous editions were made in Italy and abroad and annotated by various scholars; very copious indexes were also published separately. R. wrote other works, especially sermons, which are preserved in manuscript at the Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome, of which he was a munificent patron. He also left a large legacy to the Archconfraternity of Pilgrims of Rome.
