RINALDI (Raynaldus), Odorico. - Oratorian. - Born in Treviso in June 1594 (cf. A. Marchesan, op. cit. in bibl., p. 7), d. in Rome on 22 January 1671.
After studying in his native city and in Parma, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory in Rome in 1618 and served twice as superior (1650–56). He is the most important continuator of the *Annales ecclesiastici* that Baronius (v.) had carried up to 1198. Using both the notes left by Baronius and documents from the Vatican Archive, Rinaldi published in Rome, between 1646 and 1662, eight volumes in-folio (volumes XIII–XX of the series), reaching the year 1534. Volume IX (XXI of the series), divided into two parts, appeared posthumously in Rome, edited by the Congregation, and extends to the year 1565. It bears two dates: the printing date (1676–77) and the date of ecclesiastical approval (1685–86). Rinaldi also published in Italian a compendium of Baronius’s *Annales* in three volumes (1st ed., Rome 1641–43), and one of his own (1st ed., ibid. 1667). Numerous editions were issued in Italy and abroad and annotated by various scholars; very extensive indices were also published separately. Rinaldi wrote other works, especially sermons, which are preserved in manuscript form in the Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome, of which he was a generous patron. He also left a substantial bequest to the Arciconfraternita dei Pellegrini in Rome.
