RINALDI (Raynaldus), ODORICO. — Oratorian, born in Treviso in June 1594 (cf. A. Marchesan, op. cit. in the bibliography, p. 7), died in Rome on 22 January 1671.
After studying in his native city and in Parma, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory in Rome in 1618 and was twice its superior (1650–56). He is the most important continuator of the Annales ecclesiastici, ARMONIO (v.) had brought down to 1198. R., making use both of notes left by Baronio and of documents from the Vatican Archives, published in Rome, between 1646 and 1662, 8 folio volumes (vols. XIII–XX of the collection), reaching the year 1534. Volume IX (XXI of the collection), divided into two parts, appeared posthumously in Rome under the care of the Congregation and reaches the year 1565. It bears two dates: that of printing, 1676–77, and that of ecclesiastical approval, 1685–86. R. also published in Italian a compendium of Baronio’s Annali in 3 volumes (1st ed., Rome 1641–43), and one of his own work (1st ed., there 1667). Numerous editions were produced in Italy and abroad and annotated by various scholars; very extensive indexes were also published separately. R. wrote other works, especially sermons, which are preserved in manuscript at the Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome, of which he was a munificent patron. He also left a substantial bequest to the Archconfraternity of Pilgrims of Rome.
