PRIE, RENÉ de. - Cardinal, b. in Touraine in 1451, d. 9 September 1519 at the abbey of Notre-Dame de Lyre (Evreux). A cousin of Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, minister of King Louis XII of France, he owed his numerous offices to the latter's protection. He was abbot of various abbeys, grand archdeacon of Bourges, apostolic protonotary, almoner of the King, bishop of Bayeux (1499-1515) and of Limoges (1510), cardinal (18 December 1506, proclaimed 17 May 1507). He followed Louis XII on the expeditions to Genoa and Savona, then joined him at Milan (October 1510), while he was at war with the Pope, disobeying the latter's express prohibition. He was one of the promoters of the Conciliabulum of Pisa (v.) of 1511. He was therefore excommunicated and deposed from every dignity (11 October 1511). Having afterwards, together with the others, made ample amends for his errors, he was reinstated in his offices by Leo X.
