PRIE, RENÉ de. - Cardinal, born in Touraine in 1451, died on 9 Sept. 1519 in the abbey of Notre-Dame de Lyre (Evreux). A cousin of Cardinal Giorgio d'Amboise, minister of King Louis XII of France, he owed his numerous positions to his protection. He was abbot of various abbeys, archdeacon of Bourges, apostolic protonotary, almoner to the King, bishop of Bayeux (1499-1515) and of Limoges (1510), and cardinal (18 Dec. 1506, published 17 May 1507). He accompanied Louis XII on expeditions to Genoa and Savona, then joined him in Milan (Oct. 1510), while the king was at war with the Pope, disobeying the Pope's express prohibition. He was one of the PISANDI (v.) in 1511. For this he was excommunicated and stripped of all his dignities (11 Oct. 1511). Later, having made ample amends for his errors with the others, he was reinstated in his positions by Leo X.
