PRIE, RENÉ DE

PRIE, RENÉ de. - Cardinal, b. in Touraine in 1451, d. on 9 Sept. 1519 in the abbey of Notre-Dame de Lyre (Evreux). A cousin of Cardinal Giorgio d'Amboise, minister of the king of France Luigi XII, he owed his numerous offices to the latter's protection. He was abbot of various abbeys, grand archdeacon of Bourges, apostolic protonotary, royal almoner, bishop of Bayeux (1499-1515) and of Limoges (1510), cardinal (18 Dec. 1506, published 17 May 1507). He accompanied Luigi XII on the expeditions to Genoa and Savona, then joined him in Milan (Oct. 1510), while he was at war with the Pope, thus disobeying the latter's express prohibition. He was one of the PISANDI (v.) of 1511. He was therefore excommunicated and deprived of every dignity (11 Oct. 1511). Having subsequently made ample amends for his errors together with the others, he was reinstated in his offices by Leone X.
