SALAMON, LOUIS. - Bishop, b. at Carpentras on Oct. 22, 1759, d. at St-Flour on June 11, 1829.

He went to Paris as a young man, where he became "conseiller-clerc" at the Parliament (1784). In 1790 Pius VII appointed him inter-nuncio to Louis XVI. Arrested by the revolutionaries on 27 Aug. 1792, he had a series of adventures of which he himself wrote the account, published in Paris in 1890 by the abbé Bridier under the title: Mémoires inédits de l'Inter-nonce à Paris pendant la Révolution 1790-1801. In 1801 he went to Rouen with the task of making peace among the clergy of the diocese, but he had little success. Titular bishop of Orthosia of Caria (1806), Louis XVIII sent him to Rome in 1814 as auditor of the Rota. Bishop of Belley in 1817, he never reached the see; transferred to St-Flour on 13 Jan. 1823, he there devoted special care to the seminaries and the monasteries.
