RAINALD OF DASSEL. - Archbishop of Cologne and imperial chancellor, b. ca. 1120, d. near Rome on 14 Aug. 1167.
He received the appointment as chancellor in 1156 and as archbishop in 1159, taking possession of the office before having received pontifical confirmation. When Adrian IV refused it to him, R. joined the most bitter opponents of the pope. He maintained the same attitude with Alexander III and spared no effort to ensure the success of the antipope Victor IV; and his position as archchancellor of Italy allowed him to give him a successor in the person of Paschal III. Sent as ambassador to England, he won King Henry II over to his cause. In 1167 he marched on Rome at the head of an imperial army and won a full victory over the Romans (24 May); but the plague that broke out in Rome after the entry of the Germans was the cause of his death.
