RINALDO di DASSEL. - Archbishop of Cologne and imperial chancellor, born about 1120, died near Rome on 14 Aug. 1167.
He was appointed chancellor in 1156 and archbishop in 1159, taking possession of the office before having received papal confirmation. Since Adrian IV refused it to him, R. joined the most vehement papal opponents. He maintained the same attitude toward Alexander III and spared no effort to ensure the success of the antipope Victor IV; and his position as archchancellor of Italy enabled him to provide him with a successor in the person of Paschal III. Sent as ambassador to England, he won King Henry II to his cause. In 1167 he marched on Rome at the head of an imperial army and won a complete victory over the Romans (24 May); but the plague that broke out in Rome after the entry of the Germans caused his death.
