RINALDO of DASSel. — Archbishop of Cologne and imperial chancellor, b. ca. 1120, d. near Rome on 14 Aug. 1167.
He was appointed chancellor in 1156 and archbishop in 1159, taking possession of the office before receiving papal confirmation. When Adrian IV refused to confirm him, R. allied himself with the most determined papal opponents. He maintained the same stance with Alexander III and spared no effort to secure the success of the antipope Victor IV; his position as archchancellor of Italy enabled him to secure a successor in Paschal III. Sent as an ambassador to England, he won King Henry II to his cause. In 1167 he marched on Rome at the head of an imperial army and won a decisive victory over the Romans (24 May); but the plague that broke out in Rome after the entry of the Germans caused his death.
