ANNALES ECCLESIASTICI. - A weekly review of a literary-religious character, founded by Msgr. Scipione de' Ricci, bishop of Pistoia, and published in Florence from June 2, 1780 to 1792.
Purely Jansenist and reformist in tone, on the model of the Nouvelles ecclésiastiques (v.) of Paris, it spread among cultured persons the gravest errors against Catholic doctrine, vigorously defended the dissident church of Utrecht, published, in translation, works condemned by the Church, extolled libelous writings, and did not fail to include calumnies and base insinuations against the Jesuits. Its tone was so strong and its spirit so combative that, despite the enthusiasm and the chorus of praise aroused also in France, where the articles of the A. appeared translated in the Nouvelles ecclésiastiques, there was no lack of grave apprehensions among de' Ricci's own friends. And Msgr. Giovanni Bernardino Pecci, in a memorial to Leopold I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, defined the A. as «an abomination for Catholic minds and an affliction for the entire Church» (Pastor, XVI, part III, p. 109).
Of the A. the years 1780-1782 were condemned to the Index by decr. Dec. 3, 1781 and July 8, 1782.
