ANNALES DE PHILOSOPHIE CHRÉTIENNE. - Journal founded in 1830 by A. Bonnetty (1798-1879), who retained its editorship until his death, and who was, along with L. de Bonald, L. Bautain, and H. F. Lamennais of the first manner, one of the principal supporters of traditionalism in France.
It sought to represent a kind of reaction against the prevailing rationalism, and to the exaggerated claims of reason it opposed, as the true source of truth, the doctrine revealed and handed down to us by tradition; however, it depressed human reason too much, to the point of deeming it incapable of any truth in religious and moral questions.
Bonnetty was called to order by the Congregation of the Index (1855) and obliged to subscribe to four propositions that condemned the extreme principles of traditionalism. Bonnetty submitted to them scrupulously. In 1895 the A. passed under the editorship of C. Denis, and the new tendency of immanence or of action began to assert itself in its pages (v. AZIONE, filosofia della IMMANENTISMO).
Denis was assisted by brilliant contributors: M. Blondel, L. Canet, V. Ermoni, E. Le Roy, H. Brémond, G. Tyrrell; and when the A. passed, in 1905, into the hands of L. Laberthonnière, a new program was indeed published, but the orientation remained unchanged. Therefore the volumes from 1905 to 1913 were placed on the Index (decree of 5 May 1913) and Laberthonnière was ordered to abstain from all publication. The A. then ceased.
