BONALD, LOUIS-JACQUES-MAURICE de - Cardinal, son of the philosopher, b. at Millau in the Aveyron on 30 Oct. 1787 and d. at Lyons on 25 Feb. 1870. A priest in 1811, he was for some time chaplain to the dauphin of France (Charles X). Vicar general of the diocese of Chartres, on 13 March 1823 he was elected bishop of Puy (the first after

1789), and in 1839 he succeeded Card. Fesch as archbishop of Lyons and primate of France, receiving the cardinal's hat in 1841. In 1852 he was made a senator.

A promoter of the struggle against Gallicanism, he worked to uproot its last offshoots, refusing to teach the Gallican articles and condemning the work of a fanatic of Gallicanism, supported by the government, Dupin: Manuel de droit canonique. He promoted the reform of the liturgical books of the Gallican rite in order to extirpate the Jansenist infiltrations in them. Against the state monopoly of schooling, he defended the rights of freedom of teaching. Of written works he left only: Mandements et Lettres pastorales, published by Migne in the collection: Orations sacrées (Paris, 2nd series, XIV).
