Arrigo Fiammingo (Heinrich van der Broek)

ARRIGO FIAMMINGO (HEINRICH VAN DER BROEK). - Painter, b. at Mechelen in 1530, d. at Rome in 1597. He lived for forty years in Italy, especially in Umbria, but also in Florence and Rome, inserting himself among the contemporary Mannerists, profiting little either from his experiences as a Fleming or from his new Italian studies; so that his painting is poor in color and weak in drawing and composition. Among his works we recall: at Perugia, the Crucifixion and the Adoration of the Magi, in the Pinacoteca (1562-64), and in S. Agostino the Martyrdom of St. Catherine (1580) together with the Calling of Andrew (1581); at Mongiovine, in the Sanctuary, the Deposition (1564), the Holy Family (1585), the Crucifixion (1588); at Rome, finally, the Resurrection in the Sistine Chapel, and the Lateran Council, in the Vatican Library.
