ARRIGO FIAMMINGO (HEINRICH VAN DER BROEK). — Painter, born in Malines in 1530, died in Rome in 1597. He lived for forty years in Italy, especially in Umbria, but also in Florence and Rome, placing himself among the contemporary Mannerists, while deriving little benefit either from his experience as a Flemish painter or from his new Italian learning; consequently, his painting is poor in colour and weak in drawing and composition. Among his works we may mention: in Perugia, the Crucifixion and the Adoration of the Magi, in the Pinacoteca (1562–64), and in S. Agostino the Martyrdom of s. Caterina (1580), together with the Calling of Andrea (1581); in Mongiovine, in the Sanctuary, the Deposition (1564), the Holy Family (1585), and the Crucifixion (1588); and finally, in Rome, the Resurrection in the Sistine Chapel, and the Lateran Council, in the Vatican Library.
