ARRIGO FIAMMINGO (HEINRICH VAN DER BROEK). - Painter, born in Mechelen in 1530, died in Rome in 1597. He lived for forty years in Italy, particularly in Umbria, but also in Florence and Rome, fitting in among contemporary Mannerists, though making little use of his Flemish background or of the new Italian learning; so much so that his painting is lacking in color and weak in design and composition. Among his works we recall: in Perugia, the Crucifixion and the Adoration of the Magi, in the Pinacoteca (1562-64), and in S. Agostino the Martyrdom of St. Catherine (1580) together with the Calling of Andrew (1581); in Mongiovine, in the Sanctuary, the Deposition (1564), the Holy Family (1585), the Crucifixion (1588); in Rome, finally, the Resurrection in the Sistine Chapel, and the Lateran Council, in the Vatican Library.
