BORDES, CHARLES. – Musician, born in Vouvray-sur-Loire on 12 May 1863, died in Toulon on 8 November 1909. A pupil of César Franck, he was choirmaster at St-Gervais in Paris. Commissioned by the ministry, he studied Basque folk songs; following the success of some performances of his of ancient music, he founded the Association des Chanteurs de St-Gervais (1892) and then, together with Vincent d’Indy, the Schola cantorum (1894), which was to assume such importance in French musical education and culture. He compiled the Anthologie des maîtres religieux primitifs and the journal Tribune de St-Gervais; he wrote Du sort de la musique religieuse en France (1906) and a great deal of music for orchestra.
