BUONCONSIGLIO, Giovanni, known as Il Marescalco. - Vicentine painter, active chiefly in Venice, where he worked from 1495 to 1535.

The Pietà of Vicenza, which is his masterpiece, is to be counted among his earliest works, and shows the influence of Montagna and of Antonello (see also a male portrait in the Capitoline Gallery in Rome); later, through the influence of Bellini's painting, the incisive line that characterized his style gives way to a softer and richer handling of color. Thus in the fragment in the Accademia in Venice with the heads of St. Cosmas, Benedict and Tecla (1497), in the St. Catherine and in the altarpiece of St. Roch in the Gallery of Vicenza (1502). But he was unable to absorb the new pictorial direction of the Venetian Quattrocento, as is shown by the Virgin and the Saints of the Cathedral of Montagnana, the two altarpieces of S. Giacomo dell'Orio and of S. Spirito in Venice (1511), where the figures lose much of their primitive monumentality; this is accentuated even more in the altarpiece of S. Pietro in Montecchio Maggiore (1519), the last dated work of B.
