BORDONE, PARIS. - Painter, b. in Treviso in 1500, d. in Venice in 1571. Trained in Titian's workshop, he long suffered the influence of the great master, later departing from it in favor of forms derived from Moretto, Savoldo, and Pordenone. Of his numerous works there remain, above all admirable, the portraits (for example, the Quarrelsome Knight in the Liechtenstein gallery in Vienna), his panels preserved in Venetian and Lombard churches (for example, the Holy Family with St. Jerome in S. Celso in Milan) and paintings of a profane character; but his highest expression is found in the Delivery of the Ring to the Doge of 1535, in the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, where the natural coloristic vigor of B. seems to invest and animate the architecture and the figures. Certainly his coloring is superficial, so much so that the form often appears little felt: but, among the minor artists, in the age of the great Venetian colorists, B. brings to the art of his land a genuine contribution, with a soft and harmonious charm still alive today. - See Pl.
