D'INDY, PAUL-MARIE-THÉODORE-VINCENT. - Musician, born in Paris on 27 March 1851, died there on 2 December 1931. A pupil of César Franck, he later became associated with him, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Duparc, Chausson, in founding the Société nationale de musique (1871); then of the Schola cantorum together with Bordes and Guilmant (1897), ultimately serving as director of both.
He is one of the finest modern French symphonists. Among his compositions are: Cantate Domino (3 voices and organ, Paris 1885), Ste-Marie Madeleine (ibid. 1885), Deus Israel (ibid. 1898) and some organ works such as: Prélude et petit canon (ibid. 1893), Vêpres du commun des fêtes de la Sainte Vierge.
