SCHOLA CANTORUM. - This term designates a rectangular enclosure, often raised one or two steps above the rest of the floor, placed in the ancient basilicas in the section of the main nave nearest the presbytery.
Within this enclosure, until about the 13th century, were stationed the singers who took part in the sacred functions. Examples are found in many Roman churches. There some s. c. preserve their original character entirely, while others are the result of later rearrangements and restorations. Among the oldest are remembered that of St. Stephen on the Via Latina, some elements of that of St. Clement (5th-6th century) reused in the rearrangement of the 12th century, that of St. Sabina (8th-9th centuries) and then the others of the 13th century of St. Mary in Cosmedin and of St. Sabas. Leaning against the enclosure, which sometimes had stone seats, are often two pulpits (v.) which, however, do not always prove to be original to the primitive construction. - See plate III.
