**SCHÖFFLER**, Agostino. — Born 22 Nov. 1822 at Mittelbronn (Lorraine), died 1 May 1851 near Sơn Tây.

He entered the major seminary of Nancy in 1842 and on 9 Oct. 1846 transferred to the Seminary of the Foreign Missions in Paris. Ordained priest on 29 May 1847, he departed on 16 Sept. 1847 for the missions of western Tonkin, where persecution against Christians was raging. On 1 Mar. 1851 he was captured and, after two months, beheaded. On 27 May 1900 he was beatified by Leo XIII together with the 77 Annamite martyrs (q.v.).
