DINDIA (D'INDIA), SIGISMONDO. - A Palermitan musician who lived in the 17th century. He was in Florence between 1608 and 1609 and, from 1611-12, was head of chamber music to Duke C. Emanuel I of Savoy in Turin; then at the court of the Este dukes, and from 1623-24 with Cardinal Maurice of Savoy in Rome, where he composed the music for the S. Eustachio, on poetry by L. San Martino d'Agliè and, by order of Urban VIII, a mass (1626).

There are 8 books of Madrigali a 5 voci (Venice 1607-1624), and of Villanelle a 3 e 5 (ibid. 1510-12), 5 of Musiche a 1 e 2 (ibid. 1609-23), 2 of Sacri concentus a 2-6 (ibid. 1612), 1 of Mottetti a 4 (ibid. 1627). His important Dedicatorie alle musiche to the 1st book of Mottetti (to Cardinal Federico Borromeo) and to the 7th book of Madrigali (to Cardinal Maurice) show him to be an innovator of secular music and a profound connoisseur of religious music.
