DENTICE. - Name of a Neapolitan family of musicians, active between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
FABRIZIO, a virtuoso lutenist and composer of music for his instrument and of sacred music, including Lamentationes a 5 voci, aggiuntovi li responsori, antiphone, benedictus et miserere (Milan 1593); his compositions appear in the collection of G. B. Besardo, Thesaurus harmonicus, and in that of M. Magnetta, Nuova scelta di madrigali; F. D. is moreover mentioned by V. Galilei in the Dialogo della musica antica e moderna (Florence 1571), p. 138. LUIGI, theorist and composer. His are the Due dialoghi della musica... dell' quali l'uno tratta della theoriae, et l'altro della pratica. Raccolti da diversi autori greci et latini (Rome 1553); two “arias,” contained in the collection of R. Rodio da Bari (Naples 1577), and two verses of the Miserere, one for 5 voices, the other for 4, for the Vatican chapel. SCIPIONE, of the Oratorian Fathers, a virtuoso harpsichordist; he was in Rome in 1593 and died in Naples in 1633. He published 5 books of Madrigali a 5 voci (Naples 1591, 1596, 1598, 1602, 1607), 1 book of Madrigali spirituali a 5 (ibid. 1629), and Mottetti a 5 (ibid. 1594). His compositions appear in the collection of G. Ancino and in others of the period.
