FAURÉ, GABRIEL. - Musician, b. at Pamiers on 21 May 1845, d. at Paris on 4 Nov. 1924. A pupil of Niedermayer, Dietsch and Saint-Saëns, in 1866 he was organist at Rennes, then at St. Sulpice and St-Honoré, and in 1896 at the Madeleine. In the same year he succeeded Massenet at the Conservatoire, of which he was director from 1905 to 1920.

His compositions for orchestra, chamber, theatre and church are many, among them a Requiem Mass for soloists, chorus and orchestra (1887) and a low Mass for three female voices with organ (1907). An eminently French spirit, he impressed much of himself upon his music.
