AVE REGINA CAELORUM. - It is the second of the four great Marian Antiphons, and, after its official adoption, it is recited from 3 February to Holy Thursday. Its author is unknown, but it is no later than the 12th century, since it is already found in manuscripts of that time. Indeed, characteristic of this period is its metrical structure (medieval arhythmic rhythm): the octosyllables, free from the rules of quantity and, the first and seventh, also from the norms of accent, form two stanzas in rhymed couplets (a, a; b, b). The two quatrains, nimble and joyful, celebrate Mary's heavenly queenship and her incomparable interior beauty, while recalling the part the Virgin had in human Redemption.
Having entered the liturgy as early as the 13th century, with its first verse it provided the opening for other medieval hymns (cf. U. Chevalier, Repert. Hymnol., Paris 1893; the collections of Mone and Dreves). Clement VI, who in 1350 introduced the four Marian Antiphons into the office in use among the Roman clergy, assigned it to the time after Pentecost (from Trinity to Advent); for the period from the Purification to Easter the Salve Regina was reserved. Their place, however, was changed, in 1568, by the reform of Pius V, which is still in force.
