BARBOSA MACHADO, DIEGO. — Portuguese writer and bibliographer, b. in Lisbon in 1682, d. in the abbey of S. Adriano di Sever in 1772. With his four volumes of *Biblioteca lusitana historico-critica et chronologica* (Lisbon 1741-59), a bio-bibliographical repertory of Portuguese writers, he accomplished a work analogous to that of Mazzuchelli for Italian literati. He is also the author of *Memorias para a historia de Portugal* (ibid. 1736-47). He amassed an extremely rich library and an immense number of portraits. He published against the Jesuits *Carta exhortatoria aos Padres da Companhia de Jesus* etc., issued anonymously in 1754 in Amsterdam.
