BARBOSA, AGOSTINHO. - Canon lawyer, b. at Guimarães (Portugal) on 17 Sept. 1590. He took his doctorate in utroque iure at Coimbra, and shortly afterwards went to Rome, where he spent several years in study. He was appointed consultor of the S. Congregazione dell'Indice and Apostolic Protonotary. In 1632 he went to Madrid and soon gained the favour of Filippo IV. Appointed bishop of Ugnato in May 1649, he died there on 19 Nov. of the same year.
The principal works of B. are the following: Remisiones doctorum super varia loca Concilii Tridentini (Lisbon 1618), placed on the Index by decree of 6 June 1621, republished in 1642 under the title Collectanea eorum Doctorum qui in suis operibus Concilii Tridentini loca referentes illorum materiam incidenter tractarum and no longer included in the Index by Leone XIII; Collectanea Doctorum tam veterum quam recentiorum in ius pontificium universum (Rome 1626); Iuris canonici interpretationes selectae sive praetermissa et additamenta ad Collectanea doctorum tam veterum quam recentiorum in pontificium ius universum (Rome 1626), which constitutes the sixth volume of the Lyons edition of 1688 of the Collectanea; Iuris ecclesiastici universi libri III in quibus de personis, de locis, de rebus ecclesiasticis plenissime agitur (Lyons 1633–34); Repertorium iuris civilis et canonici (ibid. 1675).
