ARRIAGA, PABLO-JOSÉ. - Spanish Jesuit, b. in 1564 at Ocaña (or at Vergara?), d. in 1622. He entered the order in 1579 and left for Peru in 1585. He served as rector of the college in Lima and of that in Arequipa, and founded the Cercado college for the sons of the caciques. From 1617 to 1620 he took an active part, together with Fr. F. Avendaño, in the campaign against the idolatrous superstitions secretly preserved by the natives and published a practical and historical treatise: *Extirpación de la idolatría del Perú* (Lima 1621). Sent to Rome, he died in a shipwreck off Cuba in 1622.
He translated into Spanish the *Tratado de la perfección religiosa* of Fr. Luca Pinelli (Valladolid 1604, frequently reprinted), wrote a *Directorio espiritual* (Lima 1609) for the Lima college, and a treatise *Rhetoris christiani partes septem* (Lyons 1916). The manuscript of the life of Fr. Giacomo Álvarez de Paz perished with him in the shipwreck. His interesting annual letters from the province of Peru are published in the *Relaciones geográficas de las Indias* (II, Madrid 1883, appendix, pp. LXXI-CXI).
