ARRIAGA, PABLO-JOSÉ. - Spanish Jesuit, b. in 1564 at Ocaña (or at Vergara?), d. in 1622. Having entered the order in 1579 and having departed in 1585 for Peru, he was rector of the college of Lima, and of that of Arequipa, and he established the college of Cercado for the sons of the caciques. From 1617 to 1620 he took an active part, together with Fr. F. Avendaño, in the campaign against the idolatrous superstitions secretly preserved by the natives, and he published a treatise that was practical and at the same time historical: Extirpación de la idolatría del Perú (Lima 1621). Sent to Rome, he died in a shipwreck near Cuba (1622).
He translated into Spanish the Tratado de la perfección religiosa of Fr. Luca Pinelli (Valladolid 1604, reprinted several times), wrote a Directorio espiritual (Lima 1609), for the college of Lima, and a treatise Rhetoris christiani partes septem (Lyons 1916). The manuscript of the life of Fr. Giacomo Álvarez de Paz perished with him in the shipwreck. His interesting annual letters of the province of Peru are published in the Relaciones geográficas de las Indias (II, Madrid 1883, appendix, pp. LXVI-CXI).
