AVVIA VESTINA. - An ancient city of Samnium, not far from Fossa. At the Roman Synod of 465 a Bishop Gaudenzio of Avicensis appears, whom L. Duchesne, against the editors of that synod, rightly claims for A. V. It is likely that the episcopal see of Forconiun (also called Cona or Furconiun), today Civita di Bagno, first mentioned at the Roman Synod of 680, succeeded A. V., which had been destroyed and abandoned. The see of Forconiun was L'Aquila (v.). The very late legends of the saints Felice and Giusta; Eusonius and Grazia, his sister; Massimo, bishop of A. V. or of Forconiun, are connected with A. V. and Forconiun.
