AVEDIKIAN, GABRIEL. — Mekhitarist of Venice, born in Constantinople in 1750, died on 24 December 1827, professor of theology and rhetoric at San Lazzaro, master of novices in the same monastery (1785–95), and later vicar general of the Congregation (1799).
Among his numerous publications, which were of a distinctly apologetic nature, the following deserve mention: *Spiegazioni degli Inni Sacri dell'Ufficiatura della Chiesa Armena* (Venice 1814), and *Commentario delle 14 lettere di s. Paolo* (3 vols., ibid. 1866–12). The work closest to the sentiments of the Armenian nation, however, was the critical edition of the *Works of St. G. Narek* (2 vols., Venice 1801, 3rd ed. 1859). In addition, the author translated into classical Armenian St. Augustine’s *De Civitate Dei*, and compiled a *Grammatica della lingua toscana* (Italian), with explanations in Armenian (Turkish translation, ibid. 1792). A work of value is the *Grammatica armena*, in two parts, the first explained in modern Armenian and the second in classical Armenian (Venice 1819).
