AVEDIKIAN, GABRIEL. - Mekhitarist of Venice, b. in Constantinople in 1750, d. 24 Dec. 1827, professor of theology and rhetoric at S. Lazzaro, master of novices in that cenobium (1785-95), and subsequently vicar general of the Congregation (1799).
Among his numerous publications, of a distinctly apologetic character, the following deserve mention: Spiegazioni degli Iuni Sacri dell'Officiatura della Chiesa Armena (Venice 1814), and Commentario delle 14 lettere di s. Paolo (3 vols., ibid. 1806-12). The work closest to the sentiments of the Armenian nation was the critical edition of the Opere di s. G. Narek (2 vols., Venice 1801, 3rd ed. 1859). Moreover, A. translated into Classical Armenian the De Civitate Dei of s. Agostino and compiled the Grammatica della lingua toscana (italiana), with explanation in Armenian (Turkish trans., ibid. 1792). A work of value is the Grammatica armena, in two parts, the first explained in vernacular Armenian and the second in Classical Armenian (Venice 1819).
