AVETIKH OF EZINGHĀ (Jerznglatzī). - Called Kešis Oklū, dissident Armenian patriarch of Constantinople. Born at Tokat (vilayet of Sivas, in Asia Minor) in 1657; he was appointed hegumen of St. James of Nisibis and bishop of Erzingan in 1690. Having gone to Constantinople in 1701 as vicar of the Armenian patriarch Ephrem, he ended up replacing him in the see and began a policy of harassment toward his clergy and against Catholics. But in the summer of 1703, after the mufti his protector had been beheaded and Sultan Ahmet III had ascended the throne, A. was captured and remained in prison for over a year; then he rose again, thanks to the intrigues of his partisans, to the patriarchal see; deposed a second time, he ended up being sent to France by the French ambassador Ferriol. There he was confined in the Bastille and then set free after having made his profession of faith in the hands of the archbishop of Paris. He died on 21 July 1711.
