GIACOMO, bishop of NISIBIS, saint. — He was the first bishop of that see and as such attended the Council of Nicaea (325). After encouraging the population during the various sieges suffered by Nisibis at the hands of the Persians, St. G. died there in 338. His friend St. Ephrem the Syrian sang his praises in his Carmina Nisibena. A very exuberant legend grew up around St. G.
