James, Bishop of Nisibis, Saint

GIACOMO, bishop of NISIBI, saint. — He was the first bishop of that see and, as such, attended the Council of Nicaea (325). After encouraging the population during the various sieges endured by Nisibi at the hands of the Persians, St G. died there in 338. His friend St Ephrem the Syrian praises him in his Carmina Nisibena. Around St G., a highly exuberant legend has flourished.
