JAMES I INTERCISUS, Saint. - Persian martyr, called the Intercised because he was torn limb from limb. Latin, Greek, Coptic, Armenian, and, first of all, Syriac acts speak of him (ed. P. Bedjan, Acta martyrum, II, Paris 1891, pp. 539-58), which agree in reporting that G. was born of a noble family in the Persian city of Bêt Lâpat and was later an official of the emperor Yazdegerd I (399-420). After the latter's death, G., at the instigation of Bahram V, apostatized from Christianity, but, moved by his mother and his wife, he repented. The Emperor then, around 421, had him cut to pieces.

Coptic tradition indicates his tomb near Penelje. His relics are said to have been transported to Braga and his head (1103) to the abbey of Cormery near Tours. The narrative of the acts raises certain historical difficulties. Feast on 27 November.
