which Paolo always has for B. and Marco in his letters.
No other information about B. is provided by the New Testament. The information from other sources has little authority. His tomb is said to have been found at the time of the Emperor Zeno (488), together with the Gospel of St. Matteo, written in B.’s own hand. B.’s name appears in the Roman Canon (Gelasian Sacramentary), and in Rome there was an ancient church dedicated to him. In the liturgy he is almost ranked with the apostles. In the East and in the West his feast is celebrated on 11 June.
