BARTHOLOMEW of Brescia (Bartholomaeus Brixen-sis). - Decretalist, born in 1258. He studied Roman law under the legist Ugolino dei Presbiteri and canon law under the decretalist Tancredi in Bologna. Most of his work is not original but consists of adaptations. His originality, however, is evident in the important collection of the *Quaestiones dominicales et veneriales* (1234), a schoolwork so named for the days dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the *quaestio*.
He is best known for his reworking of the *Glossa ordinaria* on Gratian’s *Decretum*, particularly that of Iohannes Teutonicus. In this work (likely composed between 1240 and 1246, probably after 1245), in citing earlier decretals, he did not use the *Compilationes antiquae* but rather Gregory IX’s *Liber Extra*. He added parallel passages, original questions, and material from other sources. He also reworked the *Casus decretorum*, i.e., the legal cases regulated in the texts of the *Decretum*, and revised the collection of the *Brocarda* of Damasus, with significant additions.
He is also the author of an *Ordo iudiciarius* written around 1236, which is a straightforward adaptation of a collection by his teacher Tancredi.
