BENEDETTO of S. ANDREA. – A monk and chronicler at the monastery of S. Andrea in flumine in the region of Monte Soratte, he flourished in the second half of the 10th century. He is the author of a Chronicle of his monastery and the surrounding region, which has come down to us incomplete, lacking both beginning and end, and also mutilated in the middle, in the sole codex that preserves it (Bibl. Chigi, F. IV. 75). Thus, as it survives, it extends from the reign of Julian the Apostate to the year 973. Uncultured in expression, careless in narration and in the use of sources, it nevertheless contains important information on the history of the city of Rome in the 10th century, and on events and persons contemporary with him.
