CARLO EMANUELE II, DUCA DI SAVOLA

CARLO EMANUELE II, Duke of Savoy. Born on 20 June 1634 to Vittorio Amedeo I of Savoy and Cristina of Bourbon. He became Duke on 14 October 1638, but only nominally, since he effectively ruled from 1663, when his mother, who held the regency of the duchy, died. CARLO EMANUELE II’s political position was sadly subservient to French policy (among other things, CARLO EMANUELE was obliged to support militarily France’s war against Holland, and when he went to war with Genoa, he had to accept the arbitration of Louis XIV). In relation to the Curia, he was jealous of his sovereign prerogatives (he opposed the tribunal of the Nunciature judging outside his State). Of brilliant life, he was not averse to devotion: he began the construction of the Chapel of the Holy Shroud. Died on 12 June 1673.
