CARRUARÚ, DIOCESE OF. – A city and diocese in Brazil, in the State of Pernambuco, suffragan of Olinda and Recife, erected by Pope Pius XII on 7 August 1948 by the apostolic constitution *Quae maiori*, detaching eleven parishes from the archdiocese of Olinda and Recife and one parish from the diocese of Nazareth.

Also part of the parish of Riacho das Almas was taken from the diocese of Pesqueira.
The new diocese has its see in C.; the church of Our Lady of Sorrows has been elevated to cathedral status. Provision has been made for the establishment of a small seminary and for the sending of one or two students to the Pontifical Brazilian College in Rome.
