CARTOON. - Painters call c. the preparatory drawing carried out at the very dimensions that the painting will have. Extremely useful in any technique, it is indispensable in fresco.

The artist prepares the c. also in those techniques for which the execution of the work is entrusted to artisan workshops, for example, mosaicists and tapestry makers (the famous c. by Raphael, preserved in London, for the Vatican tapestries). Also famous are the c. executed for the decoration of the Hall of the Council in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence by Leonardo (Battle of Anghiari) and by Michelangelo (War of Pisa, of which, however, only drawings and engravings exist).
