COGHETTI, FRANCESCO. - Painter, b. in Bergamo on 20 July 1802, d. in Rome on 21 Apr. 1875. After studying under Diotti, he followed Camuccini in Rome and from then on was part of the industrious group of nineteenth-century Roman fresco painters.

He shared with them a mastery in composition and a vigorous eloquence, even if often academic and theatrical in tone; in coloring he brought certain gifts inherited from his native land. In Rome he frescoed the Villa and the Palazzo Torlonia (later demolished). Other compositions of his decorated the now-vanished Teatro Apollo. For the theaters of Rimini and Spoleto he painted the stage curtains. His religious compositions are numerous in churches of the Bergamo area, in the cathedral of Savona and in Rome (Stoning of St. Stephen, at S. Paolo). He was president of the Academy of St. Luke.
