CARUARÚ, DIOCESE OF. — A city and diocese in Brazil, in the State of Pernambuco, suffragan of Olinda and Recife, erected by Pope Pius XII on 7 August 1948 with the apostolic constitution Quae maiori, detaching from the archdiocese of Olinda and Recife eleven parishes and one parish from the diocese of Nazareth.

The new diocese has its see at C.; the church of Our Lady of Sorrows has been raised to the status of cathedral. Plans are under way for the establishment of a small seminary and for the sending of one or two students to the Pontifical Brazilian College in Rome.
