Carus, Karl Gustav

CARUS, KARL GUSTAV. - German anatomist and biologist, b. in Leipzig on 3 Jan. 1789, d. in Dresden on 28 July 1869, a follower of the philosophy of nature. He is to be remembered for the work Symbolik der menschlichen Gestalt and for the work on "comparative symbolism" between the skeleton of man and of the ape (Zur vergleichenden Symbolik zwischen Menschen und Affen-Shelett [Jena 1861]), where he is the first to examine the proportions of the skeletons of man and of the gorilla, bringing to light "the dignity of the human organism" and its uniqueness. Religiously he does not free himself entirely from a note of pantheism.
