CLOYNE - The castle (13th-14th centuries).
To be remembered, besides a Deposition and a self-portrait in the Pitti Gallery in Florence, are several codices in the Vatican Library, including missals nos. 3805 and 3807; the Canon Missae in the archiepiscopal archive of Ravenna; the Silius Italicus in the Marciana Library in Venice, the Commentaries on the Epistle of St. Paul in the Soane Museum, and other manuscripts in the British Museum in London, the Psalter of Paul III in Paris, etc.
The fame of d. G. C., as the exceptional artist that he was, was immense in his own time, and certainly his abilities as a technician and draughtsman still appear truly extraordinary. Nevertheless, the judgment expressed of him today is confined to the interest that may be aroused by one who attempted to render, in painstaking detail of a somewhat Flemish taste, the self-contained harmony of Raphael’s forms or the power of those of Michelangelo; and our admiration is therefore limited to his, at times miraculous, artisanal skill.
