CLOYNE, Diocese of. - In Ireland, a suffragan of Cashel. The name comes from the Gaelic Cluain (= meadow). The diocese was founded around 580 by St. Colman, the first bishop, who is also its patron. The see of C. was united with that of Cork from 1450 until 1747, when it was separated by Benedict XIV. Therefore the diocese of C. glories in having had among its bishops Bl. Thaddeus MacCarthy (v. CORK, DIOCESE of).

The modern cathedral at Cobh, completed in the present century, is much admired as a model of neo-Gothic style. The diocese has an area of 3440 sq. km.; it has 47 parishes, 103 churches, 155 diocesan priests, 19 regulars, one seminary; schools are conducted by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and by other lay religious families. The religious houses number 25; the Catholic population is 103,412 out of 105,483 inhabitants.
