CLUJ-GHERLA, Diocese of. — Cluj is a city in Romania, the capital of Transylvania, with 99,720 inhabitants (1937 census). An ancient city, known to the Dacians as Napoca and to the Romans as Claudiopolis, it was called Castrum Cluz in the Middle Ages, from which its current name derives. In 1267, Cluj and its territory were granted by the kings of Hungary to the bishops of Transylvania. The Catholic bishop has his residence in Cluj.
