ALEXICI, IOAN. – Greek-Catholic bishop in Transylvania, born on 24 June 1801 in Maladia and died on 29 June 1863 in Gherla. On 28 October 1855 he was consecrated the first bishop of Gherla. In 1861 he was elected by the Transylvanian National Congress of Sibiu as a member of the permanent committee for “the recovery of the rights belonging to the Romanian nation.” He published in Latin: Gramatica daco-romana, sive Valachica, latinitate donata, aucta ac in hunc ordinem redacta (Vienna 1826), which contributed to knowledge of Romanian even among foreign scholars.
