ALEXICI, IOAN. - Greek-Catholic bishop in Transylvania, b. 24 June 1801 at Maladia, d. 29 June 1863 at Gherla. On 28 Oct. 1855 he was consecrated first bishop of Gherla. In 1861 he was elected by the Transylvanian National Congress in Sibiu to the standing committee for “the reconquest of the rights pertaining to the Romanian nation.” He published in Latin: *Grammatica daco-romana, sive Valachica, latinitate donata, aucta ac in hunc ordinem redacta* (Vienna 1826), which contributed to the knowledge of Romanian even among foreign scholars.
