CEFALONIA

CEPHALONIA. - City and capital of the island of the same name in the Ionian archipelago. From as early as the 4th century it was the seat of a bishopric, which was re-established as a Latin diocese in the 13th century; in 1222 it was united by Pope Honorius III with that of Zante. From 3 June 1919, the diocese of Zante and C. was united with the archbishopric of Corfu (v. CORFÙ, ZANTE E CEFALONIA, diocese of), whose prelate from then on bore the title of archbishop of Corfu, Zante and C.
