CEFALONIA. – City and capital of the island of the same name in the Ionian archipelago. From as early as the 4th century it was the seat of a bishopric, which was reestablished as a Latin diocese in the 13th century; in 1222, by Pope Honorius III, it was united with that of Zante. From 3 June 1919, the diocese of Zante and C. was united with the archbishopric of Corfù (v. CORFÙ, ZANTE E CEFALONIA, diocesi di), whose prelate thereafter bore the title of archbishop of Corfù, Zante and C.
