CEFALONIA

CEPHALONIA. - A city and the capital of the homonymous island in the Ionian Archipelago. From as early as the 4th century it was the seat of a bishopric, which was re-established as a Latin diocese in the 13th century; in 1222 Pope Honorius III united it with that of Zante. From 3 June 1919, the diocese of Zante and Cephalonia was united with the archbishopric of Corfu (see CORFU, ZANTE AND CEPHALONIA, Diocese of), whose prelate has since borne the title of Archbishop of Corfu, Zante and Cephalonia.
