DINDA (D'INDIA), SIGISMONDO. - A Palermitan musician who lived in the 17th century. He was in Florence between 1608 and 1609 and, from 1611-12, was head of the chamber music of Duke C. Emanuele I of Savoy in Turin; then he was with the Este dukes, and from 1623-24 with Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy in Rome, where he composed the music for S. Eustachio, to poetry by L. San Martino d'Aglié and, by order of Urban VIII, a mass (1626).
There are 8 books of Madrigals for 5 voices (Venice 1607-1624), and of Villanelle for 3 and 5 (ibid. 1610-12), 5 of Musiche for 1 and 2 (ibid. 1609-23), 2 of Sacri concertos for 2-6 (ibid. 1612), 1 of Motets for 4 (ibid. 1627). An innovator of secular music and a profound connoisseur of religious music, his important Dedicatorie alle musiche to the I. book of Motets (to Cardinal Federico Borromeo) and to the VII. book of Madrigals (to Cardinal Maurizio) bear witness to this.
