DOMENICO DI PRUSSIA (DI TREVRI)

DOMENICO OF PRUSSIA (of TREVRI). - Carthusian writer, b. in Prussia ca. the year 1382, d. at Trier on 21 Dec. 1460. He entered the Carthusian monastery at Trier in 1410 and spent the rest of his life there, except for a brief interval in 1415 when he helped found the Carthusian monastery at Rettel (diocese of Metz). He was renowned as a mystic for his autobiographical account of visions and revelations in the *Liber experimentarium*, which remains unpublished. He cultivated a particular devotion to the childhood of Our Lord and promoted the Holy Rosary, already existing in the Church, by adding to each Ave Maria a brief sentence recalling the mystery to be meditated, e.g.: «...fructus ventris tui Iesus, qui natus est pro nobis». He spent his last seventeen years in continual physical suffering.
