Economary

ECONOMARIA. — The hunting scene with the vision of the Cross between the stag’s antlers is the iconographic motif chosen by artists such as Pianello (National Gallery, London), Perugino (Volpi Collection, Florence), and others. Dürer represented E. dressed as a warrior, with a banner adorned with the head of the stag bearing the Cross between its antlers, as a heraldic motif (Alte Pinakothek, Munich). The stag alone, with Christ between its antlers, was represented by the carver Guglielmo on the panel of the wooden altar of Vulturella (12th–13th century). In the Byzantine miniatures of the 9th–11th centuries, E. is represented in a group of psalters studied by L. Mariès (L'irruption des Saints dans l'illustration des Peautiers byzantins, in Analecta Bollandiana, 68 [1950], p. 155) and in the Monologie di Basilio II (fol. 53, photogr. ed., Turin 1907, scene of the martyrdom). Episodes from the legend are found in the frescoes of Westminster Abbey (1245), in the stained-glass windows of the cathedrals of Chartres, Le Mans, Sens, Tours, etc., in the remarkable miniatures of the Breviary of the Duke of Bedford from the first half of the 15th century (cf. V. JALABERT, LOUIS, op. cit., III, 345), and in the frescoes of the refectory of S. Croce in Florence (1472), to mention only the principal monuments. — Vedi tav. LVI.
