ELIASIB (Hebrew "Eljasibh"). — High priest in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, son of Joiakim and father of Joiada (Neh. 3:1, 20; 12:10). He participated (Neh. 3:1) in the reconstruction work promoted by Nehemiah, though without enthusiasm; he had in fact contracted a mixed marriage with an Ammonite woman and maintained cordial relations with Tobiah, an official of the land of Ammon, a constant opponent of Nehemiah’s work. To this foreign prince, Eliasib had granted the use of a room in the Temple of Jerusalem (Neh. 13:4–7).
