FANI, Marco

N. in Viterbo from a noble family on 24 Oct. 1845; d. in Rome on 4 Oct. 1869. Founder, ACQUADERNI, GIOVANNI (v.), of the Società della Gioventù Cattolica Italiana (1867), of which a first circle, “S. Rosa da Viterbo,” had been conceived by him a few months earlier. The Association was approved by Pius IX in 1868 and received a banner bearing the programmatic words Preghiera, Azione, Sacrificio (v. Azione Cattolica). In the following year, 1869, the superior council was constituted and F. was elected to II. Death overtook him in Rome, whither he had come for a papal audience.
