ACQUADERNI, GIOVANNI. - Founder and first president of the Società della Gioventù Cattolica Italiana (v.), born at Castel S. Pietro (Emilia) on 3 March 1838, died at Bologna on 16 February 1922. One year after the dissolution of the "Associazione cattolica italiana per la libertà della Chiesa in Italia", which had been the object of a violent anticlerical reaction, A. launched the new Society with Mario Fani (v.) on 19 June 1867, with the aim of the "defense of Christian society" and with the motto: Prayer-action-sacrifice.
By 1871 the work had already reached such a stage of development that he thought of making it the promoting center of a mobilization of all Catholic forces, and from it arose the Opera dei Congressi (v.), which held its first assembly at Milan in 1874 and continued for almost thirty years to gather, through the regional, diocesan and parish committees, under the direction of a general committee, all the willing members of the Italian Catholic laity. He was a deviser and animator of ever new and varied initiatives, such as the Obolo di s. Pietro, the exhibition for the jubilee of Leo XIII (1888), the newspaper L'Avvenire d'Italia, the bank Il Credito Romagnolo.
