FANI, MARIO. - Born in Viterbo to a noble family on 24 Oct. 1845; died in Rome on 4 Oct. 1869. Founder, together with Giovanni Acquaderni (v.), of the Society of Italian Catholic Youth (1867), of which a first circle, "St. Rose of Viterbo," had been devised by him a few months earlier. The Association was approved by Pius IX in 1868, and had a banner with the programmatic words Prayer, Action, Sacrifice (v. AZIONE CATTOLICA). The following year, 1869, the supreme council was constituted and F. was elected a councilor. Death overtook him in Rome, where he had come for the pontifical audience.
