ILLUSTRAZIONE VATICANA. — On 25 December 1930, the first issue of this fortnightly periodical appeared, directed by G. Dalla Torre and by an editorial committee that included A. Mercati, B. Nogara, and G. Peruzzi.
The publishing enterprise, personified in Peruzzi, received support from Vatican City, although it was not a direct emanation thereof. The periodical, rich in illustrations, was well received by the public, also because of the repercussions of the recent Lateran Pacts. The achievements of the pontificate of Pius XI were extensively illustrated in it through articles by distinguished writers; at the same time, subjects relating to culture and art were treated with competence, adding considerable value to the collection.
For various reasons, the periodical ceased publication in October 1938. An attempt to replace it with Illustrazione romana met with little success.
